Styles of Music Video

Styles of Music Video
Narrative: This is when there is a story throughout the music video. I have chosen to analyse Britany Spears- Everytime because i think this is a really good example of a music video that is classed as Narrative. The story behind it shows her hounded by paparazzi, she then drowns her own bathtub when she starts bleeding from a wound in her head. In the hospital, doctors fail to resuscitate her while a child is born in the next room, this implys that she has been reincarnated.

Cinematic: This style of music video is usually compared to a mini film. It may be very hard to tell between narrative and cinematic, however cinematic may be seen to have more action and looks more expensive. I have analysed Ella Henderson-Ghost as she is a Britsh singer who has filmed this music video in America. The music video is based on a man who has escaped from prison and is leading the police to the real criminal of his girlfriends murder.

Studio Based: This type of music video is only filmed in one place and does not change throughout. I have deceided to analyse One Direction-Little Things as this is only been set in their recording studio and does not change throughout.

Intertexuality: This style of music video refers to other texts, however it does not mean that they are making fun of it. For example The Wanted-Walks Like Rihanna. They refer back to old music videos and copy the way these were made but was not making fun of it in a bad way.

Parody: This style of music video is similar to intertexuality, however they make fun of other music videos or artists. An example of this would be the comparison between The Verve-Bittersweet Symphony to Fat Les-Vindaloo. This music video has made fun of the man in the music video walking through the street and have made it into a Parody. Also Eminem is most popular for parody music videos, especially the music video We Made You where he makes fun of 14 artists!

Pastiche: This style of music video works seriously with another genre or time frame. A good example of this is Christina Agularia- Candyman, this is because the set of the music video is set in the American war time.

Animation:  This style of music video does not show any form of the artist or band. The music video has an animation sequence over the original soundtrack. The purpose of this is that the artist/band may not want to be shown, they wanted to be different or that the music video is a scene from a film. An example of this is the song 'Let It Go' by Idina Menzel which she created this song for the Disney film 'Frozen'. This animated video is also the official music video for the song.

As Live: An As Live type of music video is when the artist/band are performing their song live on stage. It creates a realistic atmosphere and can show great moments from the artists/bands shows and may persuade people into seeing them perform live. An example of this is Chris Browns hit 'Take You Down' which the whole music video is set from his concert.
